Four Generations of History at Hitt's Garage & Body Shop

Hitt’s Garage & Body Shop was established in 1946 by James E. (Red) Hitt. He started the business as a salvage yard and used parts center located in Shady Brook of Weston. In the early 1950s, he purchased land for the developing business in Deanville of Weston, the current location of the garage.

In 1971, Red handed the company down to his son, James E. (Jim) Hitt. Jim expanded Hitt’s by adding 24-hour towing services, a mechanic shop, and a body shop. Jim operated the business until his retirement in 1992.

Upon retirement Jim’s son, Timothy N. (Tim) Hitt, became the third-generation owner. Under Tim’s stewardship, the business continued to grow with the addition of the top-of-the-line alignment shop, an upgraded body shop to include a state-of-the-art paint booth, and the addition of a full-service auto detail shop.

Currently, Hitt’s is owned and operated by Tim’s daughter, the fourth-generation owner, Cortney (Hitt) Harris and husband, David. Cortney and David carry on the J. E. Hitt Garage tradition of quality work and excellent customer service.

Company Milestones and Community Awards

Hitt’s Garage & Body Shop has proudly served West Virginia for generations, earning a reputation built on quality, integrity, and community trust.

In January 2000, Hitt’s received the Governor’s Millennium Small Business Award, recognizing leadership and long-standing success within West Virginia’s small business community. In January 2001, the business was honored with a Certificate of Achievement for 55 Years of Continued Growth and Customer Satisfaction. In November 2007, the garage officially became J.E. Hitt Garage & Body Shop, LLC, marking a new chapter of growth while employing more than 10 team members.

Community recognition has continued to follow. In 2020, Tim Hitt was named Lewis County Chamber of Commerce Businessman of the Year, honoring his leadership and lifelong dedication to the business and community.

From 2020 through 2025, J.E. Hitt Garage & Body Shop was voted #1 Auto Body Shop by the Lewis County Choice Awards for six consecutive years, a distinction made possible by the loyalty and trust of our customers.

In 2023, current owner Cortney Lynn Harris was selected as a Generation Next: 40 Under 40 honoree, recognizing emerging leaders under the age of 40 who demonstrate professional excellence, community involvement, and a commitment to shaping the future of West Virginia.

In 2024, Hitt’s Garage & Body Shop received one of the community’s highest honors — Business of the Year from the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce. This award reflects not only business success, but also our impact on the local economy, dedication to service, and continued investment in people and progress.
